The UCCNC is using image compressions automatically based on what OpenGL supports the best on the actual video card.
You could even use high resolution images, but the images are sized down by the software automatically for the max. supported image size defined by the video card of the computer and the software always fits the images "pixel perfect" onto the screen.

I don't think so. I think the best is if you use a .png or .jpg with resolution above the max. possible size of the image shown on the screen.
