Steppers not working

Hi,

after successfully retrofitting my 3000 lbs knee-mill with a UC300ETH-5LPT from the webshop here I started working on a second machine controls (PrintNC).

This time I only the UC300ETH (w/o the official BoB) and got my hands on a cheap UB1 by CNCRoom. Although my problem described here might be more UB1 related than cncdrive/UCCNC, I still figured I'd post it here for a larger audience, sorry for the inconvenience.

Nothing special, just a random PC case, some cheap Nema 23 steppers, DM542T Drivers with a 48v PSU (1kW), and some wires:

When I try to move one axis (right now its just Z connected to rule out interference with missing shielding of the cables) the corresponding LEDs on the UB1 are turned on/off (step and dir for Z).

I think the stepper is wired up correctly (coil-wise). Still switched the 4 leads of the stepper in all possible combinations.

The actual problem is: there's no movement at all with the stepper. It's not trying to move (but blocked) or something like that, it's just the stepper is energized but not wired up correctly (when I'm pretty sure it is).

What I tried so far:

- several microsteppings on the driver (right now its on 200 - tried everything up to 1600)
- played with the actual speeds in UCCNC (although I don't think it's the problem at all)
- kept wires as short as possible (wire the stepper shown directly to the DM542T, no extension cords used or those "aviation" connectors used)
- used another DM542T driver
- checked Amperage of the drivers (it's set to max - which is about 4A). The combination of my steppers and drivers are known to work well (omcstepper 23HS32-4004S)
- checked manual of the drivers -> "enable" pin should not play a role here https://www.omc-stepperonline.com/download/DM542T.pdf

Next steps could be: use a scope (not sure how yet) to see if the UB1 is actually working (if that's a reliable way?), use another stepper and/or drivers.

Am I overlooking something? Anything obvious I am missing?

Are you sure the stepper is wired correctly to the drive?

I think so. One Coil (blue+red is one, green+black the other) goes to A+ and A-, other Coil to B+/-. I verified this by holding together 2 leads, in case the shaft cant be turned by Hand anymore = 1 coil.

AFAIK if the coiles are switched the Spinning direction of the Stepper will be reversed.

Switched "PUL" with "DIR" pins in case the drivers are just labeled incorrectly. Didn't help.

Now I just replaced the DM542T with a (cheap) TB6560, although it's just a 2.6A driver (the stepper I use are 4A) but the stepper turns! So it's either a broken set/batch of DM542T drivers by omcstepper or I'm just overlooking something (more lilkely).

You have a sticker on the top of the DM542s, so I don't see if they have input voltage selector. If yes then most likely you have the factory setting for 24V:

That's it! Nice. No idea why they would preset it with 24 instead of the more common 5v (at least I never had a controller with != 5v), but that was the culprit.
