2022 Screenset Calibrate Tool Setter issue

Postby Erphillips » Tue Apr 08, 2025 2:38 am

Using the 2022 Screenset

When I hit Calibrate Tool Setter I keep having an issue with the second probe action it always makes my Z go up until it hits the limit switch every time.

I have tried every setting I can in the Probe setup menu Etc.

My process is...

Home all
Move over material ( Same thing happens if I detect fixed probe first, not sure the of correct order )
Hit Calibrate Tool Setter button
Dialog says Initial probe for zero
Z Goes down and triggers the probe as expected
Dialog says Final probe for zero
Process goes as expected and it probes and detects the second time

Then Spindle goes to expected Z height as set, X and Y move to my fixed probe location as expected carriage stops and
Then Z drives up until it hits the limit
this causes machine reset due to limit trigger

I have tried + and - settings on clearances in the setup, Tried various Safe Z settings, etc. every time it goes Positive Z on the second probe
Various Z clearance settings, every combination I can find Z always goes up to limit on second probe.

What can be causing this?

Using latest 2022 Plugin, Version 1.2117 UCCNC

Thank You
Ed

In Probing->Settings what do you have your retract value set to? I've set mine to 2 to pull up 2mm

My Retract is set to .125 Inches, That seems to work on first probe it probes top of material retracts .125 then probes again as expected

Then it moves to my Fixed probe location exact coordinates pauses then drives Z up to limit every time.

Which Clearance plane option are you using?
Email me, or post a screenshot of your auto zero settings.

Try using 1.2115.
The version you are using is a test version, and is not supported.

I have tried both the Safe Z2 and fixed Clearance Plane,on the clearance plane setting seems that it has to be - Negative value or I get an error message ( makes sense as it would need to be below Z 0.00 )

I just tried all my same settings with version 1.2113 as it was also already installed and working on same computer, same issue
First probe operation works, when it moves to tool setter location Z goes positive to limit

all settings are in inches if it matters.

I will try version 1.2115 tomorrow if you still suggest it,

Thank You
Ed

Screenshot of the last settings I tried, I have tried dozens of settings in various places that appear to have an effect on the Z axis, always same result or a error message popup.

What is your safe Z Height 2 set to on the Settings page?
Try unchecking the "Use Safe Z2" box and changing the Clearance plane to -1 instead of -0.1

Good news

I Found the issue finally

Had to not check the "Rapid down to Z Machine ( Fixed Plate ) 'option in the probe settings I had it set to 20

Just tested it again, if selected it Z goes positive when it get to the fixed plate

Now the Bad news, I should have just been happy but had to try one more thing,

Tried a -20 for the setting and re enabled the check box
Re Homed, ran Calibrate Tool setter it proceeded to detect spoil board just fine, went to the Fixed probe location Z went down relatively fast and totally smashed / destroyed both my 3D Touch probe that was in the spindle and the fixed probe sensor on the table and jammed the Z ball screw very tight.

Very expensive lesson learned, don't set that to a negative number!!

Now to Buy and wait for new sensors to get here so I can keep going on my ATC setup.

This was using version 1.2117 UCCNC just FYI

When you select that option, it has to be a negative number, as 0 should be the top of your axis, and it will always do what it was doing if it's positive.
But it's extremely important that you know that the value you set will never cause a crash.
Sorry I didn't catch that yesterday.

Okay so "Rapid down to Z Machine ( Fixed Plate )" is a distance not a speed

Makes perfect sense now, not sure why I thought it was a speed override to Rapid down not a distance to travel from Machine 0.00

one would still think if the probe was activated during this move it would stop not just keep going to in this case 20" below my home position

Manual literally spells it out and explains the consequences of setting it wrong, I do see the value in the setting as it takes forever to go from my Z 0.00 ( Safe Z ) to the top of the fixed probe at 10 ipm

My bad for not reading the instructions better, I learn best by doing vs. reading sometimes it cost me, But I bet I never forget it now!

Rapid Down to Z Machine

This option is used during tool changes, and Tool Setter Calibration. When selected, prior to probing for
the fixed tool setter, the machine will rapid down to the specified value (in Machine Coordinates) before
starting the probing operation. This can greatly speed up the probing process, by shortening the probe
distance.
Warning! Incorrect settings may result in damage to your tools and/or machine. If this option is selected,
make sure it's location provides sufficient clearance with the longest possible tool used.

It's not a probing move, it's a rapid move down.
