Alternating ethernet network settings

Postby alexfisher » Wed Aug 16, 2017 1:33 pm

Hi CNC'ers, I dual boot into my Win-7 PC which is directly connected to my UC300ETH-5LPT. Sometimes I need to use the same Ethernet Port to access the internet but this requires resetting my Ethernet Adapter Settings.

Network and Internet ->
Network Connections ->
CncMill
Unidentified Network
Intel(R) Ethernet Connection 1217-LM

Is there a way to have two versions of these Ethernet settings (Mill & Internet) so I can enable/disable them as required?
The best advice I've had from computing forums is to get a network card with two ethernet ports.
Thanks - Alex.

Yes, there is. At the TCP/IPv4 settings you can set "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" to get them from your router to access internet. On the "Alternate Configuration" tab you can set your fixed IP for the UC300 connection. This way if the link is up the computer starts to get IP address and when it is connected to the router, it will get the addresses to access internet. When no answer comes, after a time-out (I don't remember the exact time, maybe 30 seconds) the alternate settings will take effect and you get connected to the UC300.

If it's a desktop PC, add a PCI NIC card. I bought a used one on Ebay for $10. Then you can have both connected.

I use something similar on the other end too. My UC400 was first set to fixed IP and when it saved and I tested it with fixed IP, I checked DHCP enable. (First you need to save without DHCP enabled! Restart the UCxxxETH, check connection and only after this enable DHCP.) This way it works the same way as my laptop: if they are connected to my network, they get IP from my router. If they are connected directly none of them get DHCP answer and they both set the fixed IP. It works very well, it's fully tested. :)

Hi dezsoe - thanks for the advice. I having trouble using your method, maybe you can see my mistake.
I've put some system details below relating to normal internet connection, normal mill connection, and my failed attempt to use your method.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
My router - IP gateway address.
IP address: 192.168.1.254
Subnet mask:255.255.255.0
DHCP range: 192.168.1.64 - 192.168.1.253
Physical connections: 28:3C:E4:B4:0B:A6
Wireless connections: 28:3C:E4:B4:0B:A7
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Normally connected to the internet.

Computer <-> Ethernet <-> Router <-> Internet (ipconfig).

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : home
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.73
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.254
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mill directly connected as described in manual cncdrive.com/MC/UC300ETH%20datasheet/UC300ETH_manual.pdf.

Computer <-> Ethernet <-> Mill (ipconfig).

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.10.10
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

Computer <-> Ethernet <-> Mill (UCxxx-utility).

Device: UC300ETH Serial:CD1AB2 IP:10:10:10:11

Network setting:

DHCP: Enabled
IP Address: 10:10:10.11
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.10.10.10
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mill connected directly to computer as you suggested.

TCP/IPv4 settings:
"Obtain an IP address" & "Obtain DNS server address automatically" selected.

"Alternate Configuration" (Changed settings validated).
IP Address: 10.10.10.11
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Computer <-> Ethernet <-> Mill (ipconfig).

Ethernet adapter Ethernet-Adapter:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.205.156
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0 <<<???<<<
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

Computer <-> Ethernet <-> Mill (UCxxx-utility).

Device: UC300ETH Serial:CD1AB2 IP:10:10:10:11

Network setting:

DHCP: Enabled(&Disabled)
IP Address: 10:10:10.11
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.10.10.10

When I test the connection with the UCxxx-utility I get the error:

IP range or netmask setting is wrong!
UC300ETH Serial:CD1AB2
IP address 10.10.10.11
NetMask: 255.255.255.0

Interface number:1
IP address:169:254:205:156
NetMask:255.255.0.0 <<<???<<<

Windows is also producing error:

Network Error - Windows has detected an IP address conflict.

Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact your network
adminstrator. More details available in Windows System event log.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated, thanks - Alex.

I frequently have to change ethernet configurations for work and I use a freeware utility called NetSetMan.
It allows you to create multiple configurations and switch between them quickly.

Hi Alex,

As I see, you set the same IP on the alternate settings as the UC300: 10.10.10.11. It is wrong. On the PC set alternate to 10.10.10.10 and on the UC300 set 10.10.10.11. It should work.

The subnet you marked gets the value because it uses APIPA method. It is a standard (I think Microsoft standard), and if you see an address starting with 169.254 you can be sure that it is an APIPA address and its subnet is always 255.255.0.0. It is designed to theoretically connect 2^16-2, 65534 computers without any IP configuration. I think, your computer gets this address, because it cannot see any DHCP and the alternate address makes collision error.

Try the above mentioned and tell the result.

dezsoe - thanks so much, your excellent solution works very well. I think this information should be in the manual - presumably many users could want to do the same thing.
ger21 & Redlunn, thanks for your interesting alternatives too.
Alex.
